Gulfport Home Wins $50,000, First Prize
Jackson, MS – January 15, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The Mississippi Home Corporation (MHC) today announced the three winners of its Growing a Greener Mississippi building competition. Gulf Coast Builders, LLC won the $50,000 and First Place for their affordable green home in Gulfport, MS. Habitat for Humanity Bay Waveland’s entry in Bay St. Louis received Second Place and $30,000 and Village Green Builders, Inc.’s entry in Oxford received Third Place and $20,000. The awards were announced at a luncheon during MHC’s 20th Annual Affordable Housing Conference at the Jackson Convention Complex.
The winning entry in Gulfport earned a Gold certification under the National Association of Homebuilders (NAHB) Model Green Building Guidelines and is on the market for $142,500. The home’s green features include cellulose insulation, advanced framing techniques, and sensor-controlled bathroom lighting and vent fans.
The independent panel of five judges made their selections based on the number and variety of green features incorporated during construction, architectural and interior design, and craftsmanship. “We’re proud to recognize these innovative green homes through the Growing a Greener Mississippi competition,” said Dianne Bolen, Exective Director of MHC. “Each of these seven homes demonstrates that green building and affordable housing mix. MHC will take what we’ve learned through this initiative, incorporate it into our programs, and encourage more builders to make use of green building methods,” she added.
The Growing a Greener Mississippi competition was designed by MHC to challenge builders to incorporate green building techniques in moderately priced homes and spur additional green-friendly construction in Mississippi. MHC funded the competition which resulted in the construction of seven new green homes across the state. Three entries came from Brandon, and one each from Starkville, Oxford, Gulfport, and Bay St.
Louis.
Homes built for Growing a Greener Mississippi met the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Model Green Home Building Guidelines level Bronze or above. The NAHB Model focuses on energy efficient appliances, architecture, and building methods as well as more renewable building materials. Homes built for the competition sell for less than $175,000.
